This research has examined over 50 business-to-business exchanges of surplus and by-product materials in the agri-food industry. Typical examples are surplus fruits and vegetables at retailers, pulp and peels residues from juice production, permeate from Yogurt production, spent grain and yeast from brewing, used oils from restaurants etc. About half of these potential b2b exchanges have generated (on average) important economic and environmental gains (i.e., 70 ton/yr in material flow, 45 tons/yr CO2 eq. and 12 k$/yr in operating cost). The other half could not be integrated in the operations of the analyzed businesses. Why? This research begins to answer this important question.

Learn how your personal “garbage footprint” relates to over-consumption of the Earth’s resources, our growing problem of plastic pollution, and climate change. Heather will connect the dots between waste reduction topics ranging from personal choices and actions, to waste management policies and procedures, to municipal best practices. She will also share lessons learned from her personal "Zero Waste" journey. Come join the discussion on why "Rethink" is the most important "R", and hear about some of the ways Green Venture is supporting the Hamilton community in moving toward a circular economy.

Since 2019, Guelph and Wellington County have been working with a network of over 150 collaborators to create a technology-enabled circular food economy focused on increasing access to affordable, nutritious food, launching new circular food businesses/collaborations and repositioning food waste as a resource. In April 2021 we launched COIL (the Circular Opportunity Innovation Launchpad) an accelerator that is funding circular economy scale ups and transformative demonstration projects across our urban-rural testbed network. This session will focus on what we've done to date and how new partners across Ontario can get involved and accelerate their circular economy projects

Mother Nature holds the answers to our anthropogenic challenges. At Wastenot Farms we are replicating natural solutions to solve man-made problems; we employ millions of earthworms to regenerate food waste into living soil products called Jocelyn’s Soil Booster. Our workforce keeps food waste out of landfill while producing biologically active soil that replenishes our food and health systems and can quickly sequester large amounts of carbon in the soil when applied at scale.
