Recent research by Dave Ulrich confirms that “Paradox navigator” competency seems to have the strongest relationship with business performance. The explanation is, that given the current pandemic and the dramatic contextual changes in the business world, organizations have to change to survive. Companies must be able to respond quickly to a radically different business context. Businesses had to innovate or change their business models at once, and at the same time they needed to keep their business performing efficiently while maintaining margins. They had to balance drive for growth with increasing stakeholder pressure.

Creating agile organizations requires navigating paradoxes that encourage “and/also” thinking. When organizations have single solutions to problems, they do not fully address how to change. 

How do you keep driving a Formula 1 racing car, while changing the tires at the same time?

During the COVID-19 global pandemic, companies realised that there is more to it than just getting the basics right, and many also focussed on their most valuable assets: their people.

HR is so much more than the administrative role it has been given, like making sure that people are paid on time, employment contracts are signed, and relations with unions are managed well. Things that give less added-value. Just like in Formula 1, having a car that technologically outperforms the others is key, but it takes more to win the race: a skilled driver.

Surveys from almost a decade now show that people and talent related issues are top priorities of companies. There is also more and more evidence that companies with the best ability to attract talented people outperform others. No matter the sector or the size of the company.

However, while the Covid-19 pandemic has been extremely challenging for individuals, families, organisations and societies, it has also created a platform for HR to demonstrate its value in serving the business and the workforce. 

Navigating the paradoxes in HR and accepting them as part of reality is the first step for HR to be a true strategic partner in the organization. Looking at their dashboard and having their eyes on the road at the same time. As in Formula 1 it is not only about winning the single race, but more so about winning the championship.
