David Shukman

David Shukman is a highly experienced moderator, speaker and consultant on climate issues working with sectors including transport, insurance, finance and Formula 1. For nearly twenty years, he led the BBC’s coverage of the environment with reports on the flagship TV and radio programmes and on the BBC website. A pioneer of broadcasting from remote locations from the Amazon to Antarctica, David is praised by Sir David Attenborough as “a leader in raising awareness about the most important issue facing humanity - the climate emergency.” He is a Visiting Professor in Practice at the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics and is on the advisory boards of Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and The Goals House. David’s book, ‘An iceberg as big as Manhattan’, describes the realities of reporting from the climate frontlines.

Arsenio Dominguez

Secretary-General Elect, IMO, Panama

Mr. Domínguez currently serves as Director, Marine Environment Division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), having served previously as Director, Administrative Division and Chief of Staff. Before joining IMO in July 2017, Mr. Domínguez worked for the Panama Maritime Authority starting in 1998 as Head of the Regional Technical and Documentation Office for Europe and North Africa, and as Alternate Representative and Technical Adviser of Panama to IMO from 2004 to 2014. In July 2014 he was appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Panama to IMO. From 1998 to 2017, Mr. Domínguez represented Panama at IMO, as well as at the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds) and the International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO). He also represented Panama at several shipping conferences, forums, exhibitions, seminars and workshops. Having chaired a number of meetings at international organisations, Mr. Domínguez was elected Chair of IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) from 2014 to 2017, having previously served as Vice-Chair from 2012 to 2013. He was also elected Chair of the Technical Committee at the 29th IMO Assembly in 2015, Chair of IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) Working Group on Maritime Security and Piracy from 2010 to 2014, and Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee of Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers (DSC) from 2009 to 2011. Mr. Domínguez holds a Naval Architect degree from Veracruzana University, Mexico; an MBA in Management from the University of Hull, and a Certificate of Higher Education in International Law and European Politics from Birkbeck University, both in London, England. On 18 July 2023, Mr. Domínguez was elected as the 10th Secretary-General of the IMO at the 129th session of the Council of the Organization, with effect from 1 January 2024, subject to the Assembly’s approval, for an initial period of four years from 2024 to 2027.

Anders Hammer Strømman

Anders Hammer Strømman, Lead Author Transport Assessment Report 6, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Norway & Professor, Industrial Ecology Programme, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Professor Anders Hammer Strømman obtained his Ph.D. from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2005, where he subsequently obtained a tenure position and qualified as a full professor in 2010. His academic journey reflects a dedication to sustainability, particularly climate change mitigation and circular economy. Professor Hammer Strømman's professional career has been marked by a commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research in the intersection spanning engineering sciences via life cycle assessment to climate change mitigation and transition sciences. These efforts have resulted in a substantial body of work published in reputable journals and publications. He is also a recipient of the Laudise Medal for outstanding achievements in the field of industrial ecology. His research papers and articles have become influential in shaping discussions and strategies related to both shipping and land transport. Over the last few years, Hammer Strømman has been part of working group three of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He served as a Lead Author on the chapter on Transport in the report covering the Mitigation of Climate Change. As of 2023, Professor Hammer Strømman holds leadership positions in several large research centers and initiatives related to the transition of the energy and transport sectors. In this role, he continues to lead and initiate new research addressing the sustainable transition of transport, covering both climate change mitigation and circular economy-related aspects. In addition to his research contributions, Hammer Strømman is a devoted teacher and lectures on a regular basis. He has mentored numerous students and contributed to the development of the next generation of researchers and professionals in the field.

Capt. Abdulkareem AlMessabi

Chairman, Emirates Shipping Association, UAE

Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi is responsible for the development and implementation of ADNOC Logistics & Services’ business growth strategy. As Chief Executive Officer since April 2018, he spearheaded the evolution of ADNOC L&S from a successful merger of its three legacy organizations (ADNATCO-NGSCO, Esnaad and Irshad) to a record-breaking listing on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, strengthening ADNOC L&S’ position as a global energy maritime logistics champion and the dedicated and vital logistics arm for ADNOC Group. Prior to that, Capt. Al Masabi served as Executive Vice President at Abu Dhabi Ports and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Terminals, where he was responsible for Abu Dhabi Ports’ entire day-to-day operations. He also served as Vice President at Khalifa Port, where he was directly responsible for the operational readiness during the port’s construction phase, resulting in Khalifa Port being awarded the ‘Port of the Year’ title by The Maritime Standard in 2014 and 2015. Before joining Abu Dhabi Ports in 2009, Capt. Al Masabi was Fleet Operations Manager with the National Gas Shipping Company, an ADNOC Group company. Prior to that, he was a Senior Marine Superintendent with Gulf Energy Maritime. Between 1995 and 2006, he served with NGSCO, where he rose through the ranks on board the company’s LNG/oil tankers, from his cadetship program to Master/ Chief Officer. He is Chairman of AW Shipping, an ADNOC L&S joint venture with Wanhua Chemical Group, Chairman of the Emirates Shipping Association and Board Member of the International Chamber of Shipping. Capt. Al Masabi holds an Executive MBA in Business Administration and Management from the Higher Colleges of Technology and obtained his Master Mariner certification from South Tyneside College. He is a recipient of the Chairman of the Executive Council Medal in the Executive Director category as part of the Abu Dhabi Government Excellence Awards.

Kitack Lim

Secretary General, International Maritime Organization, UK

Mr. Kitack Lim (Republic of Korea) is the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Born in Masan, Mr Lim graduated from the Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), Busan, and worked on ships before joining the Korea Maritime and Port Administration in 1985. From 1986, Mr. Lim participated in the Republic of Korea delegation to IMO meetings. In 2006, he was appointed as Maritime Attaché, minister-counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in London and served as Alternate Permanent Representative to IMO until August 2009. Mr Lim was then appointed Director General for Maritime Safety Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM). In 2011, Mr. Lim was appointed Commissioner of the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal (KMST).  In 2012, he became President of Busan Port Authority, until January 2016 when he took up his appointment as Secretary-General of IMO. Mr Lim holds master’s degrees from Yonsei University, and the World Maritime University (WMU).

Melina Travlos

President, Union of Greek Shipowners and Chair, Neptune Shipping Lines, Greece

Melina Travlos, born in Athens, holds a Business Administration Degree from Northeastern University, Boston, USA. Melina Travlos is the Chair of the Board of Neptune Lines Shipping and Managing Enterprises SA, which has been active in Greece for more than four decades in the field of maritime transport, as well as of Neptune Dry Management Company, which operates in the field of dry cargo. “I would like to express my gratitude for the honor of being unanimously elected President of the Union of Greek Shipowners. Everyone's trust fills me with pride, but above all modesty, respect and liability for my mission. She is a founding member as well as President of the Greek Shipowners' Social Welfare Company SYN-ENOSIS, a solid reference point for the collective social responsibility of the shipping community, developed by the Union of Greek Shipowners, as well as a founding member of Axion Hellas, targeting vulnerable groups in the outermost regions of Greece. She participated actively also in the foundation of the non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurs in emerging markets, Endeavor Greece.

Francesco La Camera

Director-General, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

Francesco La Camera is the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). He took office on 4th April 2019 and brings more than 30 years of experience in the fields of climate, sustainability, and international cooperation. Mr. La Camera formerly served as Director-General of Sustainable Development, Environmental Damage, EU and International Affairs at the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land & Sea since 2014. In this capacity, he developed cooperation and partnerships agreements with a wide range of countries, particularly developing countries including Small Island Developing States (SIDS). As the national coordinator for climate, environment, resource efficiency and circular economy, he led the Italian delegation to UNFCCC’s COPs 21 to 24, and the EU delegation to COP 20. He was responsible for the organisation of Italy’s G7 Environment Presidency in 2017. He also led the Italian delegation to the G7 Environment meetings in 2016 and 2018. Mr. La Camera is widely credited with having spearheaded international cooperation on issues related to climate change and the environment. He played a key role in bringing together multilateral organisations such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, UNEP, UNDP and FAO to develop joint initiatives designed to implement the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. He served as co-chair of the Africa Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development established in Rome in partnership with FAO and UNDP, and co-chaired the Financial Platform for Climate and Sustainable Development in partnership with the Italian Development Bank Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. He has also coordinated a number of national strategies, including on sustainable development, green finance and fossil fuel subsides among other things. Mr. La Camera was instrumental to the support provided by Italy to several renewable energy initiatives such as the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI), the Initiative for Renewable Island Energy (IRIE) and the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA), coordinated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The author of many publications, Mr. La Camera is a Lecturer of Sustainable Development at the University of Cosenza and of Environment & Land Economics at the University of Roma 3. He began his career as an economic analyst at the Italian Ministry of Budget & Planning. Mr. La Camera is a national of Italy, and a graduate of the University of Messina in Political Sciences (Economic Policy major).

Jens Meier

CEO, Port of Hamburg Authority, Germany and President International Association of Ports and Harbors

Jens Meier (56) has been CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) since 2008. With more than 25 years of experience in the port, logistics, finance and IT sectors, the computer science graduate is a recognized leader in the maritime industry. His previous professional positions include board positions at Fiege Holding, the tts Group, Systematics AG (later EDS) or Soft- ware Design & Management AG (Ernst & Young Group). In May 2019, Jens Meier was elected Vice-President of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), responsible for Europe, since the end of 2021 temporarily for Africa as well. Jens Meier was elected President of the IAPH in summer 2023 and has officially been in office since November 2023. He is a frequent speaker with a large media outreach, in particular on future maritime affairs and in the area of digitalization. With regard to his voluntary commitment, Jens Meier is a founding board member of the Ham- burger Informatik Forum e.V. (Hamburg Informatics Forum). He is also a member of several supervisory boards and boards of trustees. From 2015 to 2018 he served as president of Hamburger Sport Verein e.V. (HSV).

Lord Adair Turner

Chair, Energy Transitions Commission, UK

Lord Turner chairs the Energy Transitions Commission, a global coalition of companies, NGOs and experts working to achieve a net zero economy by 2040. In addition to this, he is Chairman of insurer group Chubb Europe; on the Advisory Board of Board of Shanghai energy group Envision and a board member of Envision AESC, the battery production company headquartered in Japan. More recently, he was appointed advisor to the board of Watershed Technologies Inc. and Chairman of Oaknorth Bank Ltd (a UK start-up lending money to small and medium companies) From 2008-2013, Lord Turner chaired the Financial Services Authority, leading on the redesign of global banking and shadow banking regulation. Alongside a business career, he has held a number of public policy roles: he was Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (1995-2000); chaired the Low Pay Commission (2002-2006), the Pensions Commission (2003-2006), and the Climate Change Committee (2008-2012).

Hon. Christos Stylianides

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Greece

Christos Stylianides has been Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of the Hellenic Republic since September 13, 2023. On June 25, 2023 he was elected Member of the Greek Parliament with the New Democracy Party. From September 2021 to May 2023 he served as the first Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of Greece. Between 2014 and 2019 he served as European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management. During the same period he was EU Ebola Coordinator after his appointment by the European Council. He is considered the "architect" of rescEU, the bold initiative that upgraded significantly the European civil protection system. In 2014 Christos Stylianides was also elected Member of the European Parliament (Democratic Rally Party of Cyprus/European People's Party). In two different periods he served as Government Spokesperson of the Republic of Cyprus (2013-2014 and 1998-1999). Between 2006-2013 he was a Member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus (elected in 2006 and 2011 with DISY) with a strong parliamentary record. From 2006 to 2011 he was also a member of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and was elected a Member of its Bureau in 2012. He has been Visiting Professor at the Department of Health Policy at the London School of Economics (LSE) in Great Britain, Visiting Professor in Practice at the Medical School of the University of Nicosia-Cyprus and at the Ruhr Universität Research School of Germany. In May 2021, he was appointed EU Special Envoy for Freedom or Religion or Belief (FoRB) until his appointment as Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of Greece. In recognition of his work, Christos Stylianides received important honorary awards from governments and international organizations and institutions. Among other, he received the Golden Decoration of Honour by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Honorary Award of Civil Protection of the Land of Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany) for his contribution to the upgrading of the European civil protection system. He was also named "Global Champion for Education in Emergencies" by the international organization Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and "Political Champion for Education in Emergencies" by the Malala Foundation. For his humanitarian action and contribution to coexistence and reconciliation he was awarded the "Peace and Reconciliation Prize" of the historic city of Guernica, Spain.

Prof. Lynn Loo

CEO, Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation, Singapore

Prof. Lynn Loo is Chief Executive Officer at the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), a non-profit organisation based in Singapore. Co-founded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and six industry partners, GCMD’s mission is to help the sector accelerate its decarbonisation efforts through shaping standards for future fuels, financing first-of-a-kind projects, piloting low-carbon solutions in an end-to-end manner under real-world operating conditions, and fostering collaboration across sectors. Since GCMD’s founding in August 2021, Lynn led GCMD in commissioning a study to define the safety and operational envelopes for bunkering ammonia, a drop-in biofuels pilot involving 14 vessels bunkering at three ports on three different continents to bolster the integrity of green fuels supply chain, and a shipboard carbon capture pilot that focuses on articulating the value chain of captured carbon dioxide. Currently, the team is scoping ammonia transfer pilots in port limits to ready the ecosystem for safe use of ammonia as a marine fuel. Lynn has also broadened GCMD’s circle of partners by bringing in integrated energy companies, a management consulting firm, a law firm, a marine insurance company, and several trade associations. To-date, GCMD is working with more than 100 centre- and project-level partners. Loo is also the Theodora D. ’78 and William H. Walton III ’74 Professor in Engineering, and Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, at Princeton University. She sits on numerous boards, including the Global Maritime Forum.

Bud Darr

EVP Maritime Policy and Government Affairs, MSC, Switzerland

Bud Darr is Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs, MSC Group. An experienced global maritime leader in the areas of policy, government, and related law, Bud Darr is Executive Vice President, Maritime Policy and Government Affairs of MSC Group which operates in 155 countries. “ICS provides an important forum for Swiss shipowners to stay well connected with policy developments worldwide, as well as to contribute toward finding solutions to some of the most complex problems facing our industry and the society we serve.” Bud Darr, Executive Vice President MSC Group Having served in the US Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard, as well as being an accomplished ocean yacht racer, Bud’s longstanding connection with the sea and ships is both personal and professional. Bud began his education in Submarine Nuclear Engineering and later obtained his formal undergraduate education at the US Merchant Marine Academy, where he was trained as a Deck Officer. During his service with the US Coast Guard, he studied law at the George Washington University Law School. He most recently led the Maritime Policy efforts of the Cruise Lines International Association prior to joining the MSC Group in 2017. Today, Bud is engaged across MSC’s Cargo and Passenger divisions, developing the company’s central Government Affairs function, based at the Group’s headquarters in Geneva. He is closely involved in MSC’s response to developments in environmental public policy and regulation and other industry-wide issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, maritime security, safety at sea, and international shipping policy. He serves on the Boards for the International Chamber of Shipping, UK Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, Liberian Shipowners’ Council, and Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel.

Capt. Rajalingam Subramaniam

President and Group CEO, MISC, Malaysia

Captain Rajalingam is the President & Group CEO of the MISC Group, a global energy-related maritime solutions and services provider. He also serves as a Board Member and Chairperson of several entities and joint venture companies within the Group. A trained maritime professional and an accomplished global industry leader, Captain Rajalingam holds a Post-Graduate MBA in addition to a Master’s Foreign Going Certificate from the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. He is a Member of INSEAD alumni and has attended several Executive Programmes in Finance and Management at INSEAD, Fontainebleau. Beyond his leadership roles within the MISC Group, Captain Rajalingam is a Board and Committee Member of several industry associations, including Executive Committee member of the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO), Board Member of GARD and Task Force Member of Shaping the Future of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). He is also a council member and regional chair of several maritime regulating committees.

Anders Østergaard

In 2002, Mr. Anders Østergaard, co-founded oil and shipping group, Monjasa, which today ranks among the world’s 10 largest marine fuel suppliers. By emphasising strong personal relations and engaging with local shipping communities, Monjasa services shipowners, charterers and operators in more than 800 ports worldwide. With a fleet of some 30 vessels, Monjasa has reached prominent positions in hard-to-reach markets across West Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. The Monjasa Group consists of more than 30 companies with a total revenue of USD 5.5 billion in 2022 – equivalent to 6.4 million tonnes of fuel products supplied. Mr. Østergaard serves as Group CEO in Monjasa and Secretary General and Board Member of the Emirates Shipping Association.

Nicholas Brown

CEO, Lloyds Register, UK

Nick joined Lloyd’s Register in 1996 and was appointed CEO in January 2021. In an extensive career with LR, he has worked as a ship surveyor in Bahrain, Dubai, Finland and Germany before moving to China to spend seven years leading LR’s activities in the country. He has since been Director for Business Development and Innovation, Marine Chief Operating Officer and Marine and Offshore Director. His focus as CEO is to deliver Lloyd’s Register’s vision of ‘working together for a safer world’, improving the performance and sustainability of our customers’ businesses through LR’s trusted advice, insight and expertise. Nick is a graduate of Nottingham University, a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Member of both the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology. Nick sits on the Supervisory Board of the UK Chamber of Shipping and the Advisory Council of the Global Maritime Forum. From July 2021 Nick will take up the additional role as the first elected Chair of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

Alicia Eastman

CEO, Intercontinental Energy, UK

Alicia Eastman is President and Board Director of InterContinental Energy focused on advocacy, policy, finance, and regulations. She has led investment and strategy in global markets for over 25 years, managing private equity funds, market entry and finance strategy for multinational companies specifically across Asia, including the Middle East. Alicia has focused on infrastructure, renewable energy, specialty chemicals, telecommunications, transportation, and technology. Before co-founding InterContinental Energy in 2014, she was a founding partner of Asia Pacific Capital Fund II, MAP Capital, and the Mongolia Opportunities Fund. Previously, Alicia led International Strategy and Acquisitions at Elan Biopharmaceuticals and was Vice President of Prudential Asia Infrastructure Mezzanine Capital Fund. She was also a Founding Principal at NetFuel Ventures (acquired by the University of Chicago) and has held international strategy and investment positions at Gemini, Lend Lease, and AirTouch International (Vodafone). Nikolaus H. Schuës

Nikolaus H. Schües (* 1965 in Hamburg) After his high-school diploma in 1985, Mr Schües started an apprenticeship as shipbroker in Hamburg, which he completed in 1987. In 1988 he started his Studies of Economics at the University of Buckingham, England, which he completed 1990. Thereafter, Mr Schües took an MBA course at the Instituto de Empresa, Spain, which he finished in 1992. Subsequently, he worked with shipping companies in Madrid and New York. In 1993 Mr Schües joined F. Laeisz and is today its Owner and CEO. Jeremy Nixon

CEO, ONE, Singapore and Co-Chair, World Shipping Council

Jeremy Nixon is the Global CEO of a new liner shipping company, Ocean Network Express (ONE), which is headquartered in Singapore, and commenced full operations from April 2018. His career originally started at sea as a navigating officer, followed by a BSc (Hons) in Maritime Commerce at Cardiff University (UK), and then four years at the Port of Felixstowe. In 1990, he completed an MBA at the University of Warwick (UK). He has been actively engaged in the container shipping industry for the last thirty years, and has held senior management positions with P&O Nedlloyd, Maersk Line and NYK Line, in Europe, North America and Asia. From April 2008 he joined the NYK Group as Managing Director of NYK Line Europe Ltd, based in London. Then in 2010 he transferred to Singapore to become COO of NYK Line’s new Global Liner Management Division, based in Singapore. In 2012 he was promoted to CEO and went on to become a Corporate Officer of the NYK Group. In July 2017 he resigned from NYK to head up Ocean Network Express, which is a new joint venture company founded by the K Line, MOL and NYK Group companies.

Esben Poulsson is former Chairman of The International Chamber of Shipping where he held the position of Chairman from 2016 to 2022 when he was succeeded by Emanuele Grimaldi. Mr. Poulsson is also Executive Chairman of ENESEL PTE. LTD., a Singapore based ship owning entity, of a fleet of large container vessels all under the Singapore Flag. He has worked in the maritime industry for over 45 years and has held a variety of senior management positions in Hong Kong, London, Copenhagen and Singapore. ICS will continue to fight for the maintenance of global rules for our global industry, and continuous improvement with respect to our safety record and environmental performance. Esben Poulsson Aside from his Chairmanship of Enesel Pte. Ltd., he is a Non-Executive Chairman of Nordic Shipholding A/S, Copenhagen, BW Epic Kosan Ltd., Singapore and Finnlines PLc., Helsinki. Gerardo Borromeo

Gerardo A. Borromeo is the Chief Executive Officer of the Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) Group of Companies. Mr. Borromeo has been responsible for the development and implementation of the PTC Group’s strategic initiatives and business interests in shipping and maritime services, real estate development, energy and fuel distribution, healthcare, and aviation. Mr. Borromeo is a board member of ICS, where he currently serves as Vice Chair. For two consecutive terms, Mr. Borromeo served as President of InterManager, an international trade association of global ship managers; the only Filipino to be elected to this leading post. Mr. Borromeo is also Vice-President for External Affairs of the Filipino Shipowners Association, a private sector alternate Trustee for Overseas Shipping of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) of the Philippines and a member of the MARINA Multi-Sector Governance Council. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the PTC-CSJ Foundation and the US-Philippines Society based in Washington D.C.; a Trustee of the Santa Catalina School in California; and Chairman of the Executive Board and ex-officio member of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University in Sweden. For his invaluable contributions to the Philippine maritime industry, Mr. Borromeo was honored by MARINA with the TIMONEL Maritime Achievement Award in 2014. In 2015, he was the first Filipino to be awarded the distinguished Seatrade Personality of the Year Award at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia. Mr. Borromeo earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA and is currently a member of the Executive Board of the MIT Sloan School of Management. He continues to represent MIT as a Regional Chair and Educational Counselor for the Philippines and has been recognized with MIT’s George B. Morgan Award for sustained excellence in educational council activity.

Stephen Cotton

General Secretary, ITF, UK

Stephen Cotton is the general secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), a global union federation of nearly 670 trade unions representing over 18 million workers in 154 countries in the maritime, port, road, rail, aviation and urban transport sectors. He was elected to the position at the 43rd ITF Congress held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2014, and re-elected at the 44th ITF Congress in Singapore, 2018. Under his leadership as general secretary, the ITF has transformed into a proactive campaigning organisation, allowing the ITF and its affiliates to secure industry-leading contracts and protocols with key multinational companies in the transport sector, including aviation, maritime and road transport. Cotton joined the ITF in 1993 as head of the agreements unit in the maritime section. He was later promoted to the position of assistant secretary of the special seafarers’ department (SSD), secretary of the SSD and maritime coordinator prior to his appointment as acting general secretary in October 2012. During his time as leader of the ITF’s maritime section, significant achievements were made that have positively impacted the maritime industry and bettered the lives of seafarers. The ITF inspectorate expanded from 35 to 147 inspectors and contacts, and ships covered under ITF collective bargaining agreements increased to over 12,000 from less than 2,000. Cotton oversaw major Flags of Convenience (FOC) policy changes and led the introduction of ‘Oslo to Delhi’ and Mexico City policies, which laid the foundation for the landmark 2006 signing of the International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) – establishing a set of international minimum standards enforceable by international law. Throughout his career at the ITF, Cotton has sought to improve the operations of the ITF, focusing on building affiliates’ power and streamlining the operations of the secretariat in order to make a real difference in the lives of transport workers and influence lead industry players in the transport sector. He is Chair of the Council of Global Unions (CGU), a trustee of the ITF Seafarers’ Trust and serves on the United Seaman’s Service (USS) governing body. In 2021, Cotton has been appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to serve as a Member of the Board of the UN Global Compact, an initiative that mobilises industry leaders globally to do business responsibly and improve the state of society. In 2014, Cotton received the United Seamen’s Service (USS) Admiral of the Ocean Sea Award (AOTOS), the maritime industry’s most prestigious award, in recognition of his work for defending the well-being and fair treatment of seafarers around the world.

Dimitrios Fafalios serves as President/Director of Fafalios Shipping S.A. since 2008. This is a traditional shipping company in the dry bulk sector. From 1984 to 2008, Mr. Fafalios has held various positions in Fafalios Ltd. London, including Technical manager, Technical Director with responsibilities for vessel Maintenance, Newbuildings, S&P, and Technical support for Chartering, Insurance, Post-Fixture and other departments. He has worked closely with many of the major classification societies and international shipping organisations for rule development and implementation. Mr. Fafalios has been elected Chairman of Intercargo since January 2019 having been Chairman of its Technical Committee since 2009 and one of the first members of the Technical Committee since 1999. Since 2009, Mr. Fafalios has been working closely with the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) as an alternate Board Member and in a technical capacity. From 2015 he became a member of the UGS Board of Directors and in 2018 he was elected as Chairman of the UGS Technical Committee (Maritime Safety and Marine Environment Protection Committee). “The good work of ICS on technical and regulatory matters cannot be underestimated. Coordination with BIMCO, Intertanko and Intercargo has been most effective. ICS provides excellent representation for many of shipping’s sectors including the bulk carrier fleet comprising over 12,000 vessels making it the largest sector of the world fleet in DWT terms”. Karin Orsel

Karin Orsel represents the Dutch shipowners / KVNR at ICS. In the Netherlands, she forms the dual presidency of the board of the KVNR together with Sibrand Hassing. Karin Orsel is Co-President of the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners. Mrs. Karin Orsel became a shipowner and maritime entrepreneur at the age of 23 in the northern town of Delfzijl in the Netherlands. She has been CEO of her ship management company MF Shipping Group since 2001. In 2004, Orsel acceded as a member to the board of the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners or Koninklijke Vereniging van Nederlandse Reders (KVNR) in Dutch. In 2017 she was appointed co-president of the association, together with Mr. Sibrand Hassing. “The maritime sector is expanding. The globalised world needs global transportation. This is where maritime services create opportunities to meet an increasing demand. Our global future is maritime oriented, we need ICS for a coordinated and strong voice.” Orsel has received prestigious awards, among which the “Industry Leader Award 2019” at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference in London and the “Personality of the Year 2019” at the WISTA International General Meeting. In 2017, Karin Orsel received an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration Degree of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in recognition of her significant contributions to and impact on the maritime industry through her leadership, motivation and commitment to excellence as well as her active participation in numerous national and international organisations. Hon. Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga

Ms. Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga is the current Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines. Since her appointment, she has been designated by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. as Head of the Philippine Delegation to four major conferences: the 2022 Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27, United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP15, and the United Nations Water Conference. She is the Chairperson of the Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Adaptation, Mitigation, and Disaster Risk Reduction (CCAM-DRR) and the designated representative of President Marcos to the Climate Change Commission (CCC) as Chairperson. Ms. Loyzaga was the President of the National Resilience Council (NRC), a science and technology-based public-private partnership aimed at the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Paris Climate Agreement. She was a member of the United Nations International Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (UNDRR) Asia Pacific Science Technology Advisory Group (APSTAG) and was also a Director of the UNDRR’s Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE) Philippines initiative, where NRC leads the Disaster Risk Management Strategies work theme. Ms. Loyzaga served on the Science Advisory Board of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk International Center of Excellence-Taipei (IRDR ICoE) and was a governing board member of the Future Earth Global Secretariat Hub (GSH) Taipei. She was a Trustee of the Zuellig Family Foundation, the Manila Observatory, Ateneo de Naga University and the Forest Foundation Philippines, where she also served as Treasurer. Prior to these appointments, Ms. Loyzaga was the Executive Director of the Manila Observatory from 2007-2016 and was also a Trustee of the Ateneo de Manila University from 2007-2017. During this period, she was appointed to the Department of Science and Technology’s Committee on Space Technology Applications and to the UNESCO National Commission’s Committee on Science and Technology. Christopher J. Wiernicki

Mr. Wiernicki has over 35 years of extensive commercial, government and international experience in marine and offshore design, operations, infrastructure and safety management, ports and bunkering, digitalization, cybersecurity, and clean energy transition. He is a serving member of the President’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIAC), which advises the White House on how to reduce risks and improve the resilience of the nation’s critical infrastructure sectors. Prior to his current role, Wiernicki served as Chairman of the International Association of Classification Societies and held senior roles at ABS, including President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Technology Officer and President and COO of ABS Europe Ltd. Prior to joining ABS, Wiernicki was the CEO of Designers & Planners, Inc., a naval architecture firm. Wiernicki is a recognized industry thought leader in the areas of decarbonization and sustainability, digitalization and advanced technology, marine safety management and human factors, naval architecture, marine engineering, alternative fuels, carbon economics, and environmental, social and governance (ESG). In March 2023, he accepted a position on Singapore’s Maritime International Advisory Panel (IAP). The IAP was established by the Singapore Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to seek global perspectives on key trends that will shape the maritime industry. In 2022, Wiernicki was selected as a member of the Marine Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. In 2021, he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering for his innovative leadership in the design, engineering and operation of ships and offshore structures. He is a Fellow with the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and serves on numerous university boards and advisory councils. In 2013, Wiernicki was awarded the Vice Admiral Emory S. “Jerry” Land Medal from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for outstanding accomplishment in the marine field. In 2016, he earned the United Seaman’s Service Admiral of the Ocean Seas Award for outstanding contributions to the maritime industry, and he is a member of the International Maritime Hall of Fame Class of 2016. In 2017, Wiernicki was named Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s Person of the Year. In 2018, he was recognized as one of the top 50 influential people in the tanker and trade industry by Tanker Shipping & Trade magazine and was named the International Personality of the Year at the annual Greek Shipping Awards. In April 2023, he was awarded the GREEN4SEA Leadership Award, recognizing his industry leadership and contribution to a more sustainable industry. Wiernicki was the Distinguished Industry Speaker at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2020, and in June 2023, he delivered the Commencement Message to the graduating Class of 2023 at the Webb Institute. In October 2023, Wiernicki was selected to receive the first Seatrium Visiting Professorship at the National University of Singapore College of Design and Engineering to attract top talent from the energy transition and sustainability sectors to promote knowledge transfer, capability building and support development of innovative maritime technology. She studied Law at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, where she was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons). She was awarded the title Barrister at Law from the Inns of Court School of Law in London, as a member of Lincolns Inn in England. She is a member of the Cyprus Bar Association and the Limassol Bar Association. She practiced the law profession for many years. She was elected as Municipal Councillor in Limassol Municipality from 2016 until her appointment as Shipping Deputy Minister in March 2023. As Municipal Councillor, she actively participated in numerous committees of the Municipality and was a member of the Board of Directors of various companies and organisations. She was a founding member of the Youth Chamber of Commerce of Limassol, President of the Parents’ Association in Primary Education, Member of the Federation of Parents’ Associations and Guardians of Primary Schools of the city and District of Limassol and she is an active member of public and private charities of the city. She has received honorary awards for her social and charity work. With her own contribution, a Blockchain application was implemented for the Municipality of Limassol for the first time, for the electronic issuance and authentication of documents of the Municipality, allowing the residents of Limassol to receive quality service in a digital environment. Since 2021, she has been the first female honorary member of Europa Uomo Cyprus, where she pioneered in the campaign to raise awareness for prostate cancer. William Fairclough

Managing Director, Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited

William started his career in shipping at the turn of the century after a brief foray into the world of investment banking. Having joined H Clarkson & Co in London as a shipbroker he shortly thereafter relocated to Hong Kong where he worked in a variety of roles across the chartering, projects and shipowning divisions. In 2006 William left Clarksons to become a co-founder of the Hong Kong-based shipowner Mandarin Shipping Limited, where he remains a director. In 2016 William was elected to the board of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited and in 2019 he took on the role of Managing Director. William is a graduate of Edinburgh University.

Director of Energy Transition at the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, where she coordinates the National Hydrogen Program. She’s member of the National Technical Commitee for Low Carbon Industry. Previously she was Chief of Staff and Energy Research Analyst at the Brazilian Energy Research Office (EPE). Mariana also holds a PhD in Biology and has graduated degrees in public management and environmental sciences.
