Shazeda is a scholar of state-firm tech partnerships in China, and has also worked in a variety of civil society and non-profit organizations on issues related to technology and social inequality more broadly. She has provided feedback on projects at REAL ML 2020 and presented work at the 2021 retrospective, and is familiar with the community and the type of suggestions that help advance projects in this field.

Hello! I'm based in London and work on human rights and tech - across research, policy, advocacy and campaigns. I currently work as the Tech Program Manager at Human Rights Watch, and have worked in similar roles at Open Society Foundations and Amnesty International in recent years. I'm co-chairing this year's REAL ML workshop with and also co-direct REAL ML the fledgling organisation. I'm keen to hear from participants what is valuable, what you'd like more of, where you think REAL ML could be useful as a network for researchers and practitioners looking to share resources, learnings, and to deepen impact.

Brandi Geurkink is a Senior Policy Fellow at Mozilla, the global nonprofit behind Firefox. At Mozilla, Brandi comes up with new ways to hold the internet’s biggest platforms accountable for algorithms, online advertising, privacy, and other issues. Brandi is the creator of YouTube Regrets, the largest-ever crowdsourced investigation into YouTube’s recommendation engine and its impact on society. YouTube Regrets has been featured in hundreds of news stories, cited in the EU’s Digital Services Act, and won a coveted Shorty Impact Award. I lead a reporting team at The Associated Press investigating the global impacts of artificial intelligence technologies on our communities. My investigative journalism has prompted federal investigations, cabinet-level resignations and congressional hearings. My collaborative print, digital and documentary work has been honored with a News & Documentary Emmy, Robert F. Kennedy Journalism and national Edward R. Murrow awards, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for National Reporting. I am also a former lecturer in data journalism trained in statistics, and was a ‘20 John S. Knight Journalism-Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Fellow at Stanford University, where I researched the role algorithms play in government decision-making.
