Equitable Contracting
Sparked by the cancellation of performances due to COVID-19, a number of efforts to reimagine contracting between lead artists/companies and presenters have emerged. The Dance/USA Equitable Contracting working group and the Creating New Futures Contracts/Force Majeure group have sought to address inequities in our field by reshaping presentation contracts. Sarah Greenbaum and Ben Levine of Dance Place and Sandy Garcia of Pentacle, along with others, will share research around reframing the engagement contract between presenter and artist/company/agent, as well as contracts between the artist/company and performers/ other contracted workers, in an effort to better protect both parties and work from a values-based perspective.

What is the Dance Field Doing About the Climate Crisis?
Climate Change is affecting everyone. When we talk about the impact of disaster preparedness for increasing superstorms like Sandy, Harvey, Ike, and wildfires across California which destroy the lives of artists, studios, and venues we're talking about Climate Change. When we talk about refugees displaced by floods, droughts, and related conflicts as in Syria, and social inclusion and mutual understanding in our season, we're talking about Climate Change. When we talk about public health, pandemic and in general, we're talking about Climate Change. The world is under existential threat. The arts are a demonstrable driver of sustainable societies, and we need "everyone in" to make it through the next few generations. How is the field turning its focus to contribute to an intersectional sustainable recovery so that we'll make it? This session brings dance-makers addressing climate change in their work together with researchers on art and climate change to talk about how what we make and how we make it are considering climate issues.

Crossing Bridges in Both Directions
Cross-industry collaboration innovation is the future. Our co-facilitators for this session have been researching how the Dance ecosystem in context with the larger performing arts and entertainment industries is able to grow, and find new sustainable practices and revenue models by collaborating with other industries and seeking hybrid opportunities to deepen impact for our communities. In this session we will explore how these solution seekers have been able to engage and collaborate with other industries over the past fifteen months, and will explore new ways of approaching how dance (and the performing arts) can flourish in seeking such meaningful partnerships and to engage in collaboration with other sectors to including but not limited to Sports, Public Parks, Medicine, Science, Museums, and other genres within the performing arts.

A Talking Circle: Broadening Horizons of Indigenous Communities
We often recognize the land in which we occupy but fall short in acknowledging the people who cared and nurtured it first. Our ignorance of their traditions, the lack of respect for their stories, and the commercialization of their homes – we fail to honor the sacredness of Native people and their values. Join Shadana Sultan, Patrick Makuakāne, and Eddie Madril for a talking circle; a native tradition of bringing the people together, to teach, listen, learn, and share. Through the sharing of their experiences each will amplify the necessity for all to engage with indigenous communities, beyond land acknowledgments, and how we must interrupt the trend of “othering” the Native people.

dreamscapes with jess pretty
I’m entering this class through the lens of club inspired improvisation, meaning there will be references to social dancing such as house and the cypher using euphoria and pleasure as vessels. this 30-minute class is a chance to ponder the question “what do i want?” and allow your body to respond. we will move the entire time using physicality and exhaustion to get us into world building. this class asks you to be critical about your want, to be critical about your desire, and to fall into the dreamscape as a methodology for more.

Supporting the Artistic Entity: Investing in Infrastructure for Sustainable Growth
The dance field has been experiencing an ever-widening income gap, creating significant obstacles for emerging artists to secure opportunities for sustainable growth and professional development. In addressing the steep decline of artists able to transition from early to mid-career, a gap that is even wider for artists of color, Pentacle created and implemented Administrative Resource Team (ART), a research project to test if comprehensive, bundled administrative support plus mentorship could help these artists thrive and succeed in their art and careers. Now, after the conclusion of the 2+ year study, this session will highlight key takeaways from ART and share best business practices for artistic entities to enhance their infrastructure and reach sustainable growth. Attendees will learn creative and practical solutions to some of the greatest challenges that artists are facing within their infrastructure, through lessons learned and real-world examples as discussed by an ART artist. Additionally, the speaker will walk attendees through Pentacle’s newest resource called nextSteps - a website that serves as a one-stop shop where artists and administrators can go for reliable business resources. Serving as a roadmap to help artists thrive, the site is adapted on an ongoing basis to meet the ever-changing needs of our arts community.

Beyond the Current Pandemic: The Importance of Dance Advocacy
Dance/USA’s Kellee Edusei, Executive Director, and Tony Shivers, Director of Government Affairs, reflect how the dance community has been supported during the current pandemic, what Dance/USA has been doing to support the dance community through advocacy, and what dance advocates should to do to ensure they are supported beyond the pandemic. The federal government has provided billions in economic relief to support the arts and cultural sector at the state and local levels. It is important for dance advocates to engage their elected officials at all levels to advance the interests of the dance industry. The discussion session will share best practices and provide practical tips on how to be effective advocates for the sector.

Artists Are Necessary Workers: Advocating for “Small-Budget” DanceMakers in a Changing Dance Ecology
This session will unpack Dance/NYC’s Defining “Small-Budget” DanceMakers in a Changing Dance Ecology a quantitative and qualitative analysis, which seeks to define the characteristics of small-budget dance entities and offer recommendations to better support this large swath of dance makers best poised to lead much needed transformation across the ecology. The study aims to further understand the unique characteristics, inner-workings and needs of “small-budget” dance, already known to be more diverse, resourceful. It was highly influenced by community organizing and uses NYC as a microcosm for what is happening on a national scale.. Dance/NYC’s approach throughout this study, its recommendations, and the actions it hopes will follow, responds to the urgency of the current moment and is anchored on Dance/NYC’s values of justice, equity, and inclusion. The study is grounded in the voices of dance making organizations and or/groups with budgets between $25,000 and $1 million. The findings are multi-dimensional, deeply influenced by the pervasive impacts of racism and inequality and the profound impacts of the pandemic and echo the needs of this segment across the country . The report calls for collective action in order to move this segment of the field from a place of surviving to a place of thriving. In addition to unpacking the research report, the session will outline and discuss Dance/NYC’s Artists are Necessary Workers campaign which was born out of this research. The Artists are Necessary Workers Campaign demands the acknowledgement, representation and integration of dance and arts workers into the decision-making that will envision our future post-pandemic and the role artists play in national recovery efforts . Artists serve the United States at every level: leading tourism, strengthening education, fueling the economy, and ensuring our health, wellness and imaginations. With this in mind, Dance/NYC has initiated a series of actions to highlight the importance of arts workers; build and amplify solidarity as a dance community, across the arts sector as inspiration for national efforts; and reimagine a world that is just, equitable, inclusive, and abundant. Artists are necessary workers!

The Shift to Shared Leadership Models
Together we will explore the value of a more creative and expansive approach to leadership — from the potential for a better quality of life, to the social impact of a more lateral and equitable decision-making practice. How does one make the choice to shift from a sole director or founder-led organization to one with distributed leadership? What are the benefits of deep collaboration in partnership, and how can this serve as a powerful reflection of an organization's evolving mission? We'll speak with the nine co-leaders of three dance organizations — RAWdance, Gibney Dance, and Hope Mohr Dance — who each have distinct histories and current structures, to unearth their approach to shared leadership. We'll cover the tactical, and sometimes sticky, steps involved in the transition and ongoing navigation, as well as the broader moral lessons and revelations that arise with this shift.
