A Physicist’s Guide to Life on Earth
"Each of us has three life support systems: our own body, our planet, and the infrastructure of our civilisation. We are completely dependent on them, and these three systems all operate under the same physical laws. A large-scale physics perspective on our planetary system presents a different way to look at the problems we now face, setting out the most fundamental constraints on our lives. The Earth is a highly complex engine, which is very effective at providing the conditions that life needs. Our technology may advance, but the fundamental rules for living on a planet stay the same, and they’ve been running things on Earth for billions of years. What can we learn from that perspective when it comes to the technology we develop and how we use it? "

How the NHS is using AI to predict demand for services
The first wave of the pandemic made it tremendously difficult to predict the demand on health and care services. In response, NHS England and NHS Improvement developed the COVID-19 Early Warning System — a first-of-its-kind toolkit that forecasts vital metrics. Now, it helps to prioritise care for patients on a daily basis. We look at how such a large and complex organisation like the NHS embraced AI so quickly and successfully, and the main reasons why AI adoption can fail.

To quote Churchill, ‘No crisis should go to waste’, so what have we learnt and how can it help us deal with the post-Covid fallout? Returning to pre-pandemic normal is not an option. This session goes behind the curtain to reveal what’s next for our economy and society, and how we can use the Covid crisis to steer our country in the right direction.

The 2D materials age
How are advancements in material science changing our physical and digital worlds? Graphene - a material made of a single layer of carbon atoms was first isolated in 2004 by two Russian scientists - Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov - who subsequently won the Nobel Prize for Physics. Graphene is the thinnest possible material you can imagine, with the largest surface-to-weight ratio: with one gram of graphene you can cover several football pitches. It's also the strongest material ever measured; it's the stiffest material we know; it's the most stretchable crystal. This has led to numerous technological and engineering applications, from anti-corrosion coatings and advanced telecoms to new treatments for cancer. In this fireside chat we explore with Prof Geim how this material is changing industries, what new uses he foresees, and how the innovation path has been so far.

China is the world's second largest economy and its second most important superpower. It has a grand strategy for itself and for the world that may just reshape the global economy. Improving the trustworthiness of AI systems in health and care
Numerous tools have been developed to audit and assess algorithms, which could be used in health and care to improve the trustworthiness of AI systems. These tools range from offering technical fixes for problems such as bias to supporting self-assessment of the ethical, legal, and social implications of deploying an AI system. However, there are few examples of these systems being used in practice. This session will discuss which tools are particularly promising and explore the benefits and limitations of adopting these tools more widely in health and care. The NHS AI Lab, through its AI Ethics Initiative, is currently supporting research into augmenting and trialling these tools; panellists will share more about this research as part of this session, with specific reference to what these developments will mean for commissioners, providers and innovators in health and care.

Rentier capitalism turbo-charged by technology has profited the few; negatively impacted politics, mental health and the environment and constrained economic outcomes to silo’d local optimums. The future is in fact more capitalism, and as with most of the future its already here just not evenly spread. The secret is ‘digital ownership’. Belonging, skin-in-the-game, a share in the upside. There is ‘virtue in selfishness’...it is fundamental to family, to society (the ‘virtue of selfishness’) and it turns out we now have the technology to make them fundamental to business also. Energy transition: a digital twin of the energy sector
To optimise complex electricity systems, we need digital representations of how they’re operating in real time, and the ability to digitally simulate alternative ways of working. Digital twins of the electricity system open the door to understanding how to make electricity systems more efficient in the near term, as well as how to simulate the optimal system for zero emission electricity systems in the future. This session delves into the importance of digital twins of electricity systems and the pathways to creating them.

If it's not diverse, it's not ethical
The Alan Turing Institute’s Women in Data Science and AI project that launched earlier this year highlighted a striking scarcity of quality data on the gendered nature of data science and AI careers. Findings did reveal extensive disparities between women and men in skills, status, pay, seniority, industry, job, attrition and educational background. But as AI becomes ubiquitous in everyday life, how can such a lack of diversity be ethical? What needs to change to ensure that all of society reaps the benefits of technological advances like AI?

Africa’s Carbon Time Bomb
When Greta Dargie did field research in Africa, she discovered a vast peatland in the Congo Basin, revealing it to be the largest in the tropics. They lock in 30 billion tonnes of carbon making the region one of the most carbon-rich ecosystems on Earth. If peatlands dry out, either through changes in land use such as drainage for agriculture or reduced rainfall, further decomposition resumes, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Designing Impact
Efforts across sectors and geographies to inspire behavioural change through design has the power to evoke emotional responses as well as help solve some of our biggest global challenges. Great design can accelerate social justice efforts, advance public health initiatives, and reduce carbon footprints or waste. If global individuals and institutions can find even more effective ways to harness this intentional practice - carried out and augmented by creatives at the forefront of industry, architecture, the arts and culture - it may prove to be the key to addressing some of our biggest global challenges over the next ten years. To explore this topic further, Boster Group is bringing together two leaders within design and architecture to discuss how they think about behavioural change in the context of their practice and how business leaders can do the same. Acclaimed Silicon Valley designer Yves Béhar (Founder, fuseproject) and this year’s Serpentine Pavilion architect, Sumayya Vally (Founder, Counterspace Studio) join Boster Group CEO, Susan Boster, to explore how creativity in design and architecture influences behaviour and, through innovative partnerships, becomes part of the solution to major global challenges. The two acclaimed designers – Yves, who was once Conde Nast’s Designer of the Year and Sumayya, who made this year’s TIME 100 Leaders of the Future list – will discuss how their different practices help the buildings, products and spaces that occupy our everyday lives address social justice, entrepreneurship, circularity and sustainability.

Using AI explainability statements to help build trustworthy and legal AI
The AI narrative is dominated by mistrust of the AI ‘black box.’ It leaves us with questions like: is AI fair? Is it safe? How does it work? And where does the data come from? Regulators, led by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office and the European Commission, increasingly expect companies to justify their use of AI. But it’s challenging to explain such a sophisticated and complex technology in an accessible way. This roundtable will examine how companies are ‘explaining’ their use of AI and looks at practical examples of explainability statements.
